In 1930’s Bronx, Frimme Hersh, an upstanding member of the Hassidic community, follows his own personal contract with God, which states that if he remains faithful and pious, God will spare him from hardship. One day, Frimme suffers a personal tragedy that turns him away from his faith.

 

Frimme pursues a new and lucrative life as a real estate tycoon, but remains distraught and unfulfilled.

 

He decides that to be happy, he needs a new contract. With help from his rabbis, he forges one. But Frimme is unprepared for the consequences.
